Colegio Gran Bretaña was founded in September 1997 with the aim
of offering students a high quality education in a challenging international
environment for learning. Colegio Gran Bretaña is a co-educational
international school delivering a high-quality educational programme
where the medium of instruction is English as a first language.
The central pillar of the curriculum for early childhood, primary
and secondary education is the English National Curriculum, with
adaptations to meet the requirements of the Colombian National curriculum.
The school also offers selected courses to help students meet the
requirements for the US High school Diploma. The school embraces
the tenets ofthe International Baccalaureate Organisation, promoting
intellectual rigor as well as the ideas of international understanding
and responsible citizenship. The school is committed to the development
of the whole individual. The tranquil and friendly atmosphere provides
the ideal setting to help all students achieve their maximum potential
in their academic studies, while promoting their social, cultural,
emotional, aesthetic and physical development. It provides a safe,
caring and multicultural environment, stimulating students to grow
into life-long learners, and confident, compassionate and capable
individuals. Of approximately 170 students, 43% Colombian, 25% are
North American, and 8% British, the remaining 24% being made up
of 17 different nationalities. There are 21 full-time teachers,
of whom seven are British. The other expatriate staff are from Australia,
New Zealand, South Africa and the United States. Four Colombian
staff teach Spanish and the Colombian Social Studies programme in
each class. There is also an educational psychologist and a special
needs programme. Facilities include sports areas, carpeted classrooms,
a theatre, a gymnasium and equipment for artistic, cultural, musical
and ecological activities. There are specialist rooms for technology,
science, photography, music and art. The computer lab and computers
in each classroom are fully networked, with Internet access. Sports
include gymnastics, volleyball, basketball and football. All students
are expected to participate in the extra-curricular programme, which
offers a variety of onsite and offsite activities such as tennis,
swimming and horseback riding.
